The Eiffel Tower has been named as the most popular location to snap a ‘selfie’!

The Eiffel Tower has been named as the ultimate location to snap a ‘selfie’, according to new research.

Erected in 1889, the Parisian landmark beat the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls and the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles.

The only British entry in the top 10 – from a poll of 2,000 adults by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! – was Stonehenge which fell behind the Grand Canyon and the Great Wall of China but beat the Great Pyramid of Giza, Taj Mahal and Machu Picchu.

Lucy Waddell, General Manager at Ripley’s Believe It or Not London!, said: ‘’Our founder Robert Ripley travelled 201 countries and it was his philosophy that seeing the world and visiting places of world interest can only expand our horizons and life experience.

‘’We have exhibits and artefacts from across the globe – many of which were collected by the ultimate explorer Robert Ripley himself, hopefully sparking some inspiration for budding young travellers.”

Of the 2,000 adults polled, travelling the world beat owning a home, getting married and having a high earning career as the biggest accomplishment.

Half of those polled said their children are more cultured than they were at the same age, with three quarters of them putting this down to them seeing more of the world than their parents.

The survey also demonstrated a sizeable shift in the trend from sun seekers to culture vultures, with only nine per cent of Brits viewing a sun holiday as a key decision factor now.

Instead parents travelling with children believe the most important factors when booking a holiday are experiencing new cultures, broadening geographical knowledge and developing a sense of exploration.

According to the findings, more kids request to visit the cultural delights of China, Croatia and Russia than a trip to the seaside.

When asked what the most important item was to take on holiday, most people value their camera phone to take those very important ‘selfies’ as the number one essential item beating suncream, a book, visitor guide or a bucket and spade.
