Heavenly Rembrandt 2015 – A Michelin-starred dinner at Amsterdam’s highest level

A cultural Michelin-starred dinner experience at Amsterdam’s highest level, among Rembrandt’s remarkable nude studies

Following the successful first edition of Heavenly Rembrandt in September 2014, the Rembrandt Tower Boardroom and The Rembrandt House Museum are once again joining forces for an exceptional cooperative venture. From 21 September to 4 October – the date of Rembrandt’s death – the top floor of the famous Rembrandt Tower in Amsterdam will play host to the second edition of Heavenly Rembrandt. For two weeks, guests can enjoy a Michelin-starred five-course dinner among a selection of magnificent nude studies by Rembrandt and his pupils, with unrivalled views across the capital city. The etchings on display form an exclusive preview of the exhibition ‘De Naakte Waarheid’ (The Naked Truth), which will be held from 12 February to 14 May 2016 at The Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam.

The Rembrandt Tower Boardroom only opens its doors to the public during Heavenly Rembrandt. At other times, the Boardroom – with its unique location at the cities’ highest point and outstanding level of service – is a favourite location for private business meetings held by Dutch and international companies, generally Top 500 companies. The 360-degree panoramic view from the top of Amsterdam’s tallest building is very impressive: on a clear day, the cities of Utrecht, The Hague, and Rotterdam can be seen.

Following last year’s success

Initially held as a one-off initiative in 2014, Heavenly Rembrandt is now being repeated due to its great success. Alexandra Hutter, founder and director of the Rembrandt Tower Boardroom, explains: ‘There was an overwhelming response to last year’s Heavenly Rembrandt. Prominent figures such as politician Gerdi Verbeet, journalist and presenter Eva Jinek, and television presenter Cornald Maas came and enjoyed the unique combination of art and gastronomy, along with many other people. By popular demand, and to our great delight, we are organizing a new edition this year.’ The Rembrandt Tower Boardroom is thereby supporting ‘Museum Het Rembrandthuis’ in the purchase of an important work by one of Rembrandt’s pupils, produced at the museum’s apprentice’s studio. This original work can also be seen during Heavenly Rembrandt.

The Naked Truth
Around fifteen reproductions of nude studies by Rembrandt and his pupils will be on display during Heavenly Rembrandt 2015. These works form a preview of the exhibition ‘De Naakte Waarheid. Tekenen naar naaktmodellen in Rembrandts tijd’ (The Naked Truth: Drawings of nude models in Rembrandt’s time), an exhibition of around eighty nude portraits by Rembrandt and his contemporaries, never before brought together in such large numbers. The Rembrandt House Museum– based in the house in which Rembrandt lived between 1639 and 1658 – forms the perfect backdrop for this. Drawings of nude models were also produced here in the seventeenth century. This practice was something new at the time and it was difficult to find models, especially female models.

They considered posing nude to be a scandalous act, and artists therefore often used male pupils or prostitutes from Amsterdam’s red-light district as models. Rembrandt’s nude portraits caused quite a stir, as he was determined to present a realistic impression: sagging breasts, folds of skin on the belly, and pockmarked thighs – he did not shy away from portraying such ‘flaws,’ much to the disgust of his fellow artists who preferred to draw elegant models with classic proportions.

About The Rembrandt House Museum
The former home of Rembrandt van Rijn has been converted into a museum, and as much as possible of the interior has been restored to the style of Rembrandt’s era. Seventeenth-century furniture, objects, and works of art give an impression of the possessions that Rembrandt would have had when he lived here. The museum owns a world-renowned and almost complete collection of etchings by Rembrandt. A number of these are almost always on display in the exhibition rooms. The modern museum wing regularly hosts temporary exhibitions showcasing works by Rembrandt’s predecessors and contemporaries, as well as modern and contemporary drawings and graphic works. In addition, daily etching and paint preparation demonstrations are given at The Rembrandt House Museum, showing how Rembrandt would have worked. Visitors are able to take part in free workshops, taking place all day, during which they can create their own etching and print it in Rembrandt’s apprentice’s studio.
